My third journal entry is about the invention, The Things They Carried, by Tim OBrien. This tommyrot was the best one that we read this semester. It is an effective story because of its use of symbolism and its ability to convey, in a substantive way, the reality of war on a human level.
The story introduces its characters by describing, quite liter solelyy, the things which they carried on their patrols, and into battle, in Vietnam. Letters, pocket knives, fuck openers, dog tags, bibles, packets of Kool-Aid, comic books, and so on. These items are not trivial, moreover rather, are highly symbolic of the mental and spiritual stresses that separately individual soldier must carry. A weight that is deeply personal, yet at the same time, as a collection, represents the burdens that all soldiers must bear.
each soldier is brought to life through salutary a brief description of the items they physically, hump, more or less the countryside. A mental simulacrum of each man can be formed by the items they have chosen to carry, like Rat Kiley, a medic, who carries around comic books with his medical kit, or the religious Indian, Kiowa, who carries a Bible.
Each little item sheds light on the persons individuality, yet, as a collection, the items show there collectively humanity. They hold on to these items tightly, as mental security totems, links to a saner reality thus the one they find themselves inhabiting. A reality that, while thoughts of which are desperately needed to keep their sanity, ironically, if the mind becomes lost in such thoughts, can lead to physical death.
This story specifically focuses in on one soldier, Lieutenant Cross, Cross is leading(a) Alpha Company on a mission, in which a nervous, anxiety prone, soldier, Ted Lavender, is killed.
