Ernest Hemingways Hills Like White Elephants is a short story revolving near a conference amidst an American man, and a woman named Jig. It is apparent that there is tension between the two, as the conversation in the start is short and impersonal. They comment briefly on the hills they are facing, and then the conversation turns towards what is causing the tension between the two. Jig is pregnant, and the America man tries to convince the woman to have an abortion, but only if she wants to.
She wonders if this will solve their problems and get the relationship back on track, where he argues that it is on track; but he is just worried about the pregnancy. Jig is corpulent the man that she is willing do it, but only because she doesnt boot about herself. She is expressing that she is in despair over the issue, and feels like she will lose everything. He keeps telling her that he doesnt want her to do it if she doesnt want to, but at the same time she knows that he prefers that she have an abortion. At the end of the story there is no there is no clear answer on what will happen when they leave the train station, but it is apparent that Jig wants to keep the child, and is worried about the relationship changing with each decision she makes.
