The fictional novel, Digital Fortress, by the American writer Don Brown is depicting the National security Agency (NSA) and an exis ten-spotce of a giant supercomputer that can some decipher any encrypted message through the use of a method called brute force. Deciphered messages are than used by various US agencies such as the CIA, FBI, and IRS for national security, iniquity fighting and military. The main characters of the script are Susan Fletcher, David Baker, Commander Trevor Strathmore, and Ensei Tankado. Suzan, who is a distinguished cryptographer and mathematician, works for the NSA as the head of the cryptology department and oversees the operation of the TRANSLTR which is supposed decrypt any commandment in as much as three hours. Susan was called during a week end and notified the NSAs deputy manager that a former employee, Ensei Tankado, uploaded an unbreakable algorithm on the earnings that would present the TRANSLTR useless. Indeed, when Suzan arrived to her bosss office, the computer was trying for over fifteen hours to decrypt the algorithm.



Tankado threatened Commander Trevor Strathmore, the NSAs deputy director, that he would release the unbreakable algorisms key on the internet if the existence of the supercomputer and its mission are not made public. The allegory goes on but due to the nature of assignment, only ten chapters were required to answer it. In these then chapters I read, although the book was worth reading, they embody several misleading concepts and facts. The novel is a little bias about the NSA and its operations. It also contains a unquestionable amount of contradictions about the characters. Regarding cryptography, although I absolutely have no knowledge in the field, basic terminologies and mathematical facts employed by the writer were wrong. Finally, minor literature mistakes were committed.
