The Yellow Wallpaper

Power Struggle in The Yellow Wallpaper
In the late 1800s, women were treated as second class citizens or slaves. They were defined legally and socially by their male counterparts, be it father, brother or husband. Women of this time were considered property, owned by men, and denied primal rights. A dictatorial patriarchy oppressed and silenced women, exposition them incapable of meaningful life independent of a man. Through literary devices, and symbolism, Gilman challenges masculine power and demonstrates that a womanly mind, with no self-identity or means of self-expression, has no defense but to escape to its inner sanctum: maidenly power through insanity.
The use of specific literary devices in the text adds a layer of narrative which further demonstrates the power struggle between the narrator and her husband fanny. At the beginning of the text, an anaphora is used which shows that the narrator has hope for liberation and does not believe she is necessarily trapped by her husbands masculine power.
