Debates service drive search forward. This paper is unique in its review of four up-to-date debates in the spheric strategy arena: (1) cultural vs institutional distance; (2) global vs regional geographic diversification; (3) converging vs divergence in corporeal governance; and (4) domestic vs oversea corporate social responsibility. For each debate, the history is tracked and the appear tension highlighted. By introducing both sides of four lively and well timed(p) debates, the paper provides an innovative way of reviewing the literature and helping to earn the fi eld. It is argued that an underlying theme connecting these four diverse debates is the institution-based view of global strategy.

Introduction

At the intersection between strategic management and supranational business, global strategy has emerged as one of the frontier disciplines at bottom business schools (Peng 2006, 2007, 2009).



The development of the global strategy ?eld has passed through a number of bumps and turns, yet has relentlessly progressed (Segal-Horn 2007). The bumpy path has been one rife with debates. In both research and practice, debates help drive the ?eld forward (Meyer 2007; Peng 2004a, 2007). What are some of the incumbent debates in global strategy that will keep the ?eld energized and focused in the years to come?
